About the position

The University Architect/Director of Design plays a crucial role in the Capital Project Management (CPM) senior leadership team, overseeing the architectural development of university campuses. This position ensures design alignment with university requirements and coordinates project transitions from predesign through construction, while providing design expertise to support the university's capital investment strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the development and continuity of architectural and interior design guidelines for future projects.
  • Participates in all aspects of capital project delivery, including feasibility studies, programming, and project plan reviews.
  • Chairs building advisory committees and leads Project Executive Committees.
  • Facilitates administrative approvals for projects.
  • Evaluates the vendor marketplace to stay informed of trends and best practices in design and construction.
  • Serves as a design point of contact with internal partners and external groups, including the Board of Regents and State Designer Selection Board.
  • Works with the Director of Planning to manage the refinement of the Campus Plan and related district plans.
  • Strengthens collaboration with university units essential to capital project development.
  • Provides accurate information to the Board of Regents to assist in decision-making regarding capital projects.
  • Advances the University Board of Regents Sustainability policy and state mandates for energy efficiency.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in Architecture or closely related field.
  • At least twelve (12) years of related experience in architectural design and/or urban/campus planning.
  • Four (4) years of direct supervisory experience of professional staff.
  • Architectural licensure in the State of Minnesota is required.
