About the position

The University Associate General Counsel for Litigation, Employment, and Student Affairs Unit at CUNY provides in-house legal advice and representation on faculty, staff, and student matters. This role involves managing employee disciplinary proceedings, labor arbitrations, and discrimination complaints, while advising senior administrators on complex issues in public higher education. The position is hybrid, allowing for both remote and on-site work.

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-house legal advice and representation on faculty, staff, and student matters.
  • Manage employee disciplinary proceedings and labor arbitrations.
  • Assist outside counsel and handle discrimination complaints filed with external agencies.
  • Advise on alleged employee/student misconduct.
  • Directly advise senior administrators on challenging matters in public higher education.
  • Participate in evaluating and developing University policy related to legal matters.
  • Represent the University at various internal and external meetings and negotiations.
  • Provide legal and policy analysis of issues and participate in developing and drafting policy.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Five years' related experience in legal practice.
  • New York State Bar membership in good standing or eligibility for admission to the NYS bar within the first year of employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Litigation experience, including trial practice and/or labor arbitrations or administrative hearings.
  • Experience handling labor or employment issues, especially public employee labor and employment law.
  • Proficiency in legal software (Westlaw, Lexis, Workshare Compare, Clearwell) and administrative tools (Zoom, MS Teams, Microsoft 365).
