About the position

The UNIX/Linux System Administrator 3 role at HII's Newport News Shipbuilding involves maintaining the smooth operation of multi-user computer systems, coordinating with network administrators, and providing technical support. The position requires managing and maintaining VMware HPE SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure, configuring and troubleshooting Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers, and implementing virtualization solutions. The role also includes automating system administration tasks and collaborating with IT teams to ensure seamless integration of IT systems.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain smooth operation of multi-user computer systems.
  • Coordinate with network administrators.
  • Interact with users and evaluate vendor products.
  • Make recommendations for hardware and software purchases.
  • Coordinate installation and provide backup recovery.
  • Develop and monitor policies and standards for computing resource allocation.
  • Set up administrator and service accounts.
  • Maintain system documentation and tune system performance.
  • Install system-wide software and allocate mass storage space.
  • Manage and maintain VMware HPE SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure.
  • Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) servers.
  • Implement and manage virtualization solutions using VMware vSphere and HPE SimpliVity.
  • Design and implement backup and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Automate system administration tasks using scripting and automation tools.
  • Monitor system performance and implement improvements.
  • Provide technical support and training to internal teams and clients.
  • Collaborate with other IT teams for seamless integration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
  • Equivalent qualifications include NNS Apprentice School graduate, Navy Nuclear Power School graduate, Associate's Degree with 2 years of relevant exempt experience, or 4 years of relevant non-exempt experience.
  • Military Paygrade E-5 or above military experience.
  • High School/GED with 4 years of combined relevant experience or 8 years of non-exempt experience.
  • A relevant professional certification can substitute for a Bachelor's Degree.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in systems administration, with at least 2 years in VMware HPE SimpliVity and Red Hat Linux.
  • Strong knowledge of VMware vSphere, HPE SimpliVity, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
  • Experience with virtualization, backup, and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Capable of obtaining a Security Clearance.
