About the position

The Computer Associate (Software) III position at the Department of Social Services (DSS) involves functioning as a UNIX/Linux System Administrator. The role is critical in supporting the technology infrastructure for the Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) in New York City. The position requires managing and maintaining a large-scale enterprise server environment, troubleshooting various system issues, and implementing changes based on user requests.

Responsibilities

  • Work on daily UNIX/Linux Infrastructure requests from HRA DSS/DHS users through the agency's Service Now system.
  • Review requests and incident tickets within the UNIX Infrastructure group and with users.
  • Attend Service Now conferences for request approvals and implement changes post-approval.
  • Review daily Enterprise Server activity reports.
  • Monitor and maintain the health of 800+ large-scale enterprise servers including Solaris LDOMs, Zones, Power LPARs, Red Hat Enterprise Virtual servers, and AWS EC2 instances.
  • Setup system policies for server hardware and software configuration on UNIX/Linux servers and AWS instances.
  • Troubleshoot hardware failures, operating system errors, network connection issues, database errors, application errors, and security issues.
  • Write scripts for system automation and collaborate with application groups, other system administrators, and vendors to resolve server issues.
  • Perform installation, configuration, implementation, and upgrade of hardware and software in UNIX/Linux/AWS/Azure/container environments.
  • Tune systems based on observability tools such as AppDynamics, Splunk, Pager Duty, and Turbonomics.
  • Participate in the evaluation, design, and planning of modernized datacenter solutions on-prem and in cloud environments.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in computer science or a related computer field and one year of satisfactory full-time computer software experience in computer systems development and analysis, applications programming, database administration, maintenance and support, systems programming, data communications, mainframe development, mobile development, web development and design.
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of satisfactory full-time computer software experience as described above.
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to the above, with specific substitutions allowed for college education.
