About the position

The Unix Systems Engineer II is responsible for the deployment and support of UNIX Server based operating systems, focusing on AIX and Linux technologies. This role involves making design decisions, developing team standards, and documentation aligned with project initiatives and business needs. The engineer will also handle customer and team-driven projects, resolve incidents and requests through Service Now, and participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation for priority service calls.

Responsibilities

  • Understand daily administration of AIX servers, Linux, and SAN based mass storage assignment.
  • Configure, integrate, maintain, debug performance issues, analyze recovery, and address user issues on standard Unix Platforms.
  • Perform ESX VCenter tasks including deployments, cloning, migrations, and API calls.
  • Provide scripting support and abilities within Perl, Python, and Standard Shell commands.
  • Administer IBM Power 8 and 9 Series Servers.
  • Understand IBM Virtualization layer including HMC's and IBM Power Series Frame deployments.
  • Troubleshoot and provide performance analysis and capacity planning for AIX and Linux environments.
  • Administer on-prem Kubernetes clusters.
  • Automate IaC, CaC, and administration tasks via Ansible.
  • Anticipate, mitigate, identify, troubleshoot, report, and resolve hardware, software, and firmware problems on servers.
  • Conduct research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards in support of systems software procurement and development efforts.
  • Work with the team on daily operational issues by addressing incidents reported through the Service Desk system.
  • Maintain and improve server performance, reliability, and security in compliance with BTS Standards and Policies.
  • Support the deployment of new systems in response to customer requests and organizational requirements.
  • Participate in new system deployments, technical exchange meetings, and document reviews.
  • Perform operating system/utility software installation, testing, implementation, maintenance, and configuration management.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of AIX UNIX platform administration experience.
  • 5+ years of Linux Server Technology support experience.
  • Working knowledge of High Availability and Load balancing technologies.
  • Hands-on exposure managing Kubernetes clusters and Container implementations.
  • Familiarity with SAN and NAS technology.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage priorities in a team environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail, self-managing, and solutions-oriented.
  • Bachelor's degree or combination of education/experience/certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Exposure to Ansible - Moving heavily to automation.
  • Strong coding or scripting skills.
  • Experience with professional tools like Terraform.
