About the position

Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (BB&N) is seeking a part-time Upper School Visual Art Teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year, starting in August 2024. This position is designed for a knowledgeable art teacher who values student voice and agency, employs a variety of pedagogical approaches, and can work independently. The teacher will be responsible for instructing students in a wide range of studio-based artistic disciplines, primarily focusing on 9th and 10th graders. The role includes teaching two semester-long introductory level visual arts classes in both the Fall and Spring semesters, totaling four classes. The Visual Arts Teacher will collaborate closely with colleagues in the Arts Department and is expected to attend regular department and faculty meetings, as well as three to four evenings of art gallery openings. Responsibilities may also vary according to current program needs and new initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Teach two semester-long introductory level visual arts classes to 9th and 10th-grade students in both Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in the Arts Department.
  • Attend regular department and faculty meetings.
  • Participate in three to four evenings of art gallery openings.
  • Maintain studio equipment and materials to ensure a safe and accessible working environment.
  • Adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and student needs.

Requirements

  • Teaching experience in studio arts with a strong background in at least two disciplines such as photography, drawing and painting, ceramics, or other 3D media.
  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant field is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Experience with holistic and inclusive approaches to art and art history.
  • Ability to maintain studio equipment and materials.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for working with adolescents and exceptional interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in additional artistic disciplines beyond the primary two required.
  • A strong online art portfolio showcasing personal artistic abilities and student works.
