About the position

The Upward Bound Counselor/Academic Adviser at Fisk University is responsible for managing the Upward Bound tutoring program, providing academic and personal counseling to students, and monitoring their academic progress. This role involves coordinating data collection and reporting, delivering direct services, and collaborating with faculty and other personnel to enhance student performance and engagement. The counselor will also participate in various campus programs and events, ensuring that students receive the necessary support for their academic and career development.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver direct services to students including academic, personal, career, and financial counseling.
  • Prepare case notes and documentation for students' records.
  • Audit Upward Bound Program files monthly to ensure information is updated.
  • Coordinate service delivery with faculty advisors and monitor academic progress.
  • Participate in on-campus programs and events for students.
  • Work collaboratively with instructors and personnel at target schools.
  • Recommend interventions to improve student academic performance.
  • Assist directors with day-to-day administrative support.
  • Assist with the development of graduate recruitment and promotional materials.
  • Work with IT personnel to develop student tracking systems and training modes for retention activities.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus and off-campus resources.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of work experience in higher education, secondary education, or counseling providing direct services to students.
  • Strong organizational, communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in PC and MS Office products.
  • Strong knowledge of Upward Bound tutoring programs and academic advising.

  • Experience with Upward Bound-eligible student populations.
  • Polished presentation and public speaking skills.
