About the position

The Urban Designer & Planning Project Coordinator will be part of the Urban Design Center within the City of Charlotte's Planning, Design and Development Department. This role involves supporting various urban design projects and programs, leading placemaking initiatives, and managing project budgets from design through construction. The position requires collaboration with multiple departments and stakeholders, providing design guidance, and participating in regulatory processes. Candidates should possess strong communication skills and be prepared for a fast-paced work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support on Urban Design Center projects and programs.
  • Lead Placemaking projects and manage budgets from design through construction.
  • Lead planning processes, write reports, and produce high-quality graphics and materials.
  • Provide design guidance to city Capital Projects, including understanding of constructability.
  • Work with other departments on major initiatives (e.g., Corridors of Opportunity, Strategic Mobility Plan, Community Area Planning, etc.).
  • Provide design subject matter expertise and participate in regulatory processes (rezoning, design review committee, code compliance).

Requirements

  • Four-Year degree in Planning, Architecture, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Science or related degree, with a strong preference for a Master's Degree in the above fields of study.
  • Five years (5) years of urban design experience in multiple areas of practice (notably urban design, public space planning, placemaking, policy planning and implementation).
  • Demonstrated experience in urban design principles, practices, and their applicability to the community.
  • Experience leading projects and implementing project plans.
  • Knowledge of and experience carrying out community engagement plans.
  • Experience working with design and development professionals.
  • Ability to collaborate within internal and external organizations.
  • Experience in presenting and working with diverse audiences and all segments of the City's population.
  • Technical skills including proficiency with all Adobe Suite products, AutoCAD, ArcGIS Pro, SketchUp, post-rendering software, hand sketching, and Microsoft Office Suite.
