About The Position

The Urban Park Ranger position at the Houston Parks and Recreation Department is designed to enhance public safety and ensure the proper use of parks and facilities. The ranger will monitor park areas, interact with the public, conduct inspections, and provide educational presentations, all while promoting a sustainable community and quality urban life.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One year of experience in law enforcement, emergency response, security, or a related field.
  • Valid driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's driving policy.
  • Completion of specific training within one year of hire.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Experience in customer service and conflict mediation.
  • Ability to work as a team member and maintain cooperative relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors trails, picnic areas, pavilions, and similar park areas to promote public safety.
  • Interacts effectively with the public, explaining park rules and handling inquiries and complaints.
  • Investigates and resolves visitor complaints to provide quality customer assistance.
  • Performs basic inspections of mobile vendors for compliance with health ordinances.
  • Conducts investigations and issues citations regarding animal violations and illegal dumping.
  • Completes reports on incidents such as accidents, injuries, and violations.
  • Controls activity levels within assigned parks by managing access and permits.
  • Provides crowd control and parking management at city-sponsored events.
  • Conducts informative presentations on various safety and environmental topics.
  • Uses radio communication equipment to relay information and request assistance.
  • Attends meetings, training sessions, and conferences as required.
