About the position

The University of Minnesota is seeking a Data Analyst (Researcher 2) to join the IPUMS team, which provides access to the world's largest collection of population and health survey data. This role involves working collaboratively within a team of research and IT professionals to enhance and develop data collections, including IPUMS USA, CPS, Time Use, and Health Surveys. The ideal candidate will be technically minded, able to learn quickly, and possess strong communication skills to simplify complex information and contribute to user-facing documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and create data and metadata via the IPUMS data processing pipeline, including harmonizing codes across datasets and ensuring data quality.
  • Write internal and user-facing documentation and training materials, translating technical documentation into accessible formats.
  • Participate in User Support activities, including responding to user questions and summarizing common inquiries for documentation improvements.
  • Engage in conference travel and provide information for grant reporting purposes as needed.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree with at least one year of related experience or a combination of education and work experience to equal five years.
  • Proficiency with statistical software (e.g., Stata, R).
  • Knowledge of relevant subject matter (e.g., demography, health, economics).
  • Experience synthesizing complex information into accessible formats.
  • Experience working with large-scale census or survey data.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple streams of work.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with technical writing, such as documentation about data or statistical methods.
  • Experience combining multiple data sources.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python or Julia and/or Unix.
  • A master's degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
