About the position

The US Payroll Tax Manager position is a full-time role based in New York, NY, requiring a hybrid work arrangement. This contract position is expected to last for six months and offers a competitive hourly rate ranging from $89.43 to $95. The primary responsibility of the Payroll Tax Manager is to partner with an external payroll provider to ensure accurate and timely filing of US federal, state, and local tax returns, as well as managing related tax activities such as W2Cs and year-end tax processes. The role demands a high level of organization and the ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting strict deadlines. In addition to tax return filings, the Payroll Tax Manager will oversee the internal ecosystem of US tax controls, systems, and processes to ensure compliance across various jurisdictions. This includes managing ongoing audits, monitoring changes in tax requirements, and ensuring that the business operations remain compliant. The manager will also be responsible for standard tax reporting, maintaining employment tax accounts in the payroll vendor system, and assisting with the completion of necessary authorizations related to tax accounts. The role requires excellent communication skills to support employee tax-related queries and to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external vendors. The ideal candidate will have a strong analytical mindset to recognize and resolve problems, along with a background in financial services or investment banking. Payroll certification is a plus, and a college or university degree is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with external payroll provider for accurate and timely US federal, state, and local tax return filings, estimates, or extensions.
  • Coordinate and manage any related W2Cs that may be required.
  • Manage and oversee year-end tax-related activities.
  • Maintain the internal ecosystem of US tax controls, systems, and processes for compliance in each jurisdiction.
  • Manage various ongoing audits through to completion and implement new controls as necessary.
  • Assist with US tax multi-state allocations related to business travel.
  • Monitor and anticipate changes to federal, state, and local tax requirements for compliance.
  • Responsible for standard tax reporting, including quarterly and annual tax filings and internal business partner requests.
  • Maintain employment tax accounts in payroll vendor system, ensuring accuracy and timely updates.
  • Assist with completion of Power of Attorney and Third-Party Authorization for new tax accounts.
  • Manage end-to-end tax agency inquiry process, ensuring satisfactory resolution of issues.
  • Support employee tax-related queries using the internal ticketing system.
  • Assist the team on any tax-related or other payroll projects.

Requirements

  • Experience in financial services and/or investment banking industry is preferable.
  • Knowledge and experience with employment/withholding taxes preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across different internal teams and vendors.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills to recognize and resolve problems.
  • Payroll certification is a plus.
  • College/university degree desired.
