About the position

The Hematology US Scientific Director, Medical Affairs (SDMA) is a key role within Merck's Research Laboratories, focusing on driving scientific excellence and optimizing field readiness in the hematology therapeutic area. This position involves collaboration with various teams to implement strategic plans, facilitate training, and ensure alignment with organizational priorities. The SDMA serves as a subject matter expert, guiding field medical strategy and training while actively participating in the regional medical affairs team.

Responsibilities

  • Infuses local insights into Global Scientific Content (GSC) and Global Scientific Training (GST) plans.
  • Facilitates local pull-through of GSC and GST, and plans and implements aligned local training as needed.
  • Identifies and prioritizes US field resources, training needs, and activities within the Hematology program.
  • Develops and provides input into field resources for Regional Medical Scientific Directors (RMSDs).
  • Partners with various teams to orchestrate and deliver regional training.
  • Ensures alignment and pull-through of pre- and post-congress regional training and content.
  • Collaborates with USMA leadership to define prioritized USMA Field strategy and implementation goals.
  • Participates in information exchange and sharing of best practices across USMA roles and teams.
  • Collaborates with the USMA FM Alignment Director to ensure consistent training standards and processes.
  • Provides input into strategic congress priorities for USMA and participates in activity planning at key scientific congresses.
  • Aligns with USMA Leadership Team on the integrated US Country Medical Affairs Plan (CMAP).
  • Continuously scans the healthcare environment and analyzes emerging trends in the therapeutic landscape.

Requirements

  • An advanced degree (e.g., MD, PhD, PharmD) relevant to the specific disease area and recognized medical expertise in the Oncology space.
  • A minimum of 5 years of medical affairs experience or equivalent clinical/research experience in Oncology, specifically in hematology.
  • A minimum of 3 years of working in Hematology (clinical, research, or pharmaceutical environment).
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and execute strategy.
  • Ability to clearly articulate complex scientific concepts in one-on-one and group settings.
  • Experience leading complex projects with the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a complex organizational environment and effectively operate in a team-oriented structure.
  • Excellent relationship and networking skills to work across a heavily matrixed organization.
  • Knowledge of the US healthcare system, treatment guidelines, clinical research processes, FDA regulations, and OIG guidelines.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
