About the position

As a Data Scientist III at Walmart, you will be an integral part of a dynamic team focused on developing and deploying Generative AI applications that support the finance department. Your role will involve building state-of-the-art large language models (LLMs) by training them with vast amounts of data sourced from Walmart, utilizing both open-source and proprietary tools. This position is not just about technical prowess; it requires collaboration with various business teams to identify opportunities and translate their requirements into innovative technical solutions. You will lead the design and development of generative AI solutions, working closely with engineers and platform architects to ensure the integration and deployment of robust machine learning applications and systems. The team you will be part of is dedicated to enhancing the customer experience across Walmart's extensive offerings, from groceries to entertainment. By leveraging technological innovations, we aim to empower team members, stores, and merchants. Your contributions will help improve in-store services, merchant tools, and data science applications, ultimately enhancing search and personalization for our customers. Staying at the forefront of data science and machine learning advancements is crucial, as you will continuously explore and evaluate new technologies and methodologies to enhance the team's capabilities. In this role, you will conduct advanced analyses to provide actionable recommendations regarding product features, ensuring that our solutions are not only innovative but also efficient and applicable to real-world scenarios. Your strong analytical skills and experience with optimization problems will be key to driving success in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with business teams to identify opportunities and translate requirements into innovative technical solutions.
  • Lead the design and development of generative AI solutions, utilizing established techniques and creating custom algorithms when necessary.
  • Work closely with engineers and platform architects to integrate and deploy robust ML applications and systems.
  • Stay at the forefront of data science and machine learning advancements by continuously exploring and evaluating new technologies and methodologies.
  • Conduct advanced analyses to provide recommendations on the applicability and efficiency of product features.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 2 years' experience in an analytics or related field.
  • Master's degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field.
  • 4 years' experience in an analytics or related field if no degree is held.
  • Strong knowledge of retail and one or more business practices across domains such as product, finance, marketing, technology, and business systems.
  • Exceptional analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with large dataset mining tools and open-source programming tools (e.g., R, Python).
  • Expertise in solving optimization problems using integer programming.
  • Ability to deconstruct abstract problems, formulate hypotheses, and conduct detailed analyses.
  • Experience navigating ambiguity and building rapid business cases/prototypes.
  • Hands-on experience with analytics and reporting tools such as Google Cloud Platform (BigQuery), Microsoft Power BI, and Microsoft Excel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Data science, machine learning, optimization models experience.
  • Master's degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics.
  • Successful completion of one or more assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R.
  • Experience using open source frameworks (e.g., scikit learn, tensorflow, torch).
  • Knowledge of accessibility best practices and experience implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards.
