About the position

In this role, you will be working on future-looking initiatives aimed at enhancing the in-store customer experience for over 240 million Walmart customers. The mission is to create significant improvements in-store experiences by leveraging emerging technologies to meet evolving customer expectations. Success in this role requires a cross-functional, mission-based team that is highly entrepreneurial, collaborative, and passionate about solving complex problems. We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join our organization, which focuses on building data, training, and optimization pipelines to identify in-store shrink behaviors using modern computer vision techniques. You will support a wide array of state-of-the-art technology areas, including Computer Vision and Machine Learning, designed to operate on edge devices. Candidates should possess sufficient technical depth and breadth in the relevant technologies to make informed decisions regarding portfolio management, resource allocation, and roadmap development. Our team collaborates closely with our US stores and eCommerce business to better serve customers by empowering team members, stores, and merchants with technological innovations. Walmart U.S. offers an extensive selection of products, from groceries to entertainment, that our customers value, whether they shop online at Walmart.com, through mobile apps, or in-store. Focus areas include customers, stores, employees, in-store service, merchant tools, merchant data science, and search and personalization. As an Engineering Manager, you will provide supervision and development opportunities for associates by selecting and training them, mentoring, assigning duties, and building a team-based work environment. You will establish performance expectations, conduct regular evaluations, provide recognition and rewards, coach for success and improvement, and ensure diversity awareness. You will also develop innovation strategies, processes, and best practices by leading internal technical teams, partnering with cross-functional teams, and communicating with decision-makers and executives within the organization. Additionally, you will lead agile teams for medium-to-large scale, complex, cross-functional projects, ensuring on-time delivery and providing leadership to the project team. Your role will also involve supporting business objectives by collaborating with business partners to identify opportunities and addressing high-priority initiatives. You will lead the discovery phase of projects to develop high-level designs by partnering with product management, Web Operations, project management, and user experience teams, driving proof-of-concept and implementing prototypes to validate ideas.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and develop associates by selecting, training, mentoring, and assigning duties.
  • Build a team-based work environment and establish performance expectations.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide recognition and rewards.
  • Develop innovation strategies, processes, and best practices by leading internal technical teams.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to develop assessments of key opportunities and document project scopes.
  • Lead agile teams for medium-to-large scale, complex, cross-functional projects.
  • Translate project requirements into technical solutions and gather necessary information.
  • Communicate status and issues to team members and stakeholders, ensuring on-time delivery.
  • Lead the work of six to ten engineers on assigned engineering projects.
  • Support business objectives by collaborating with business partners to identify opportunities.
  • Lead the discovery phase of projects to develop high-level designs and drive proof-of-concept.

Requirements

  • Experience with Distributed Systems.
  • Experience with Edge Computing.
  • Proficiency in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Understanding of Architecture and Design patterns.
  • Background in Machine Learning Engineering, working with ML Ops, infrastructure, and distributed systems.
  • Extensive experience using ML solutions such as AWS, GCP, and Azure cloud.
  • 3+ years of people management experience in multi-disciplinary global teams.
  • Experience managing joint hardware-software development and rapid prototyping projects.
  • A true passion for technology and a desire to mentor and lead others.
  • A desire to set technical direction.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area.
  • Experience in creating inclusive digital experiences and knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards.
