About the position

As a User Experience Technology Design Engineer in the Future Systems Advanced Products and Technology (APT) group, you shall execute design activities associated with new product ideation, design, development and capture lessons learned through the build and evaluation for defense applications. The User Experience Technology Design Engineer will participate in multi-disciplined teams and will be responsible for designing important human factors improvements through the User-Interface / User Experience utilizing advanced technologies. This includes generating product hardware designs, schematics, leading the overall subsystem design, and product testing of user interfaces, controls, for both the physical and software based user experience. The User Experience Technology Design Engineer will work in an Integrated Product Teams (IPT) with a spirit of creativity, innovation, quality and continuous improvement with a focus on researching, studying, designing and executing advanced concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering expertise for new product development of User Interfaces (human-factors) and User Experience.
  • Develop design concepts that are related to defense systems and capabilities.
  • Develop design concepts around how humans' interface with robots, operator controls, software, and artificial intelligence.
  • Focus areas include how our Warfighters engage with control systems through their senses (sight, touch, audible, etc.).
  • Research industry HMI strategies, methods, best practices, and designs.
  • Develop concepts and support the creation of solutions and laboratory testing throughout an iterative process to build a strong HMI capability at GDLS.
  • Inform and assist future systems in selecting, acquiring and utilizing Industrial Design tools.
  • Support briefings for senior leadership at headquarters and in the Global markets.
  • Metrics gathering and analysis.
  • Designing, editing, proofing, fact checking.
  • Use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools.
  • Ensuring content is on-brand, consistent in terms of style, and quality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree from accredited 4-year university / college majoring in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering or similar.
  • Masters degree desired.
  • 7 plus years experience in similar role.
  • Responsible for leading the hardware development team consisting of other hardware engineers, mechanical engineers, software and firmware engineers.
  • Design, develop, and test operator hardware and software products, components, and subsystems.
  • Develop engineering design fixes and coordinate solutions.
  • Lead the component selection, procurement, and oversight of prototype hardware builds.
  • Perform technology research, feasibility assessments, and detailed hardware design requirements definition.
  • Ability to multi-task, meet or exceed deadlines, and build strong team relationship with members of the communications and strategy teams.
  • Demonstrated creativity / innovation.

  • Demonstrated initiative and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

  • Experience coding graphical user interfaces and various software protocols.
  • Human Factors experience related to user interfaces and user experiences through displays and controls using sight, sound, and touch.
  • Ability to use engineering development and test tools.
  • Familiarity with military standards and test requirements desired.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills.
  • The candidate will need to have strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Expertise with graphics software.
