About the position

The Utilities Maintenance Tech I position involves performing a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction work on public utilities and projects. This includes activities related to street, drainage, alley, water, and wastewater maintenance. The role requires participation in manual labor associated with the operation, maintenance, repair, and construction of the water system, sanitary sewer system, and storm drainage system. The technician will assist with installing water and sewer taps, locating water and sewer lines, and cleaning sewer stoppages. Additionally, the technician will read water meters and troubleshoot or replace them if necessary, perform visual inspections of businesses and residences for water and sewer leaks, and assist with the maintenance of City facilities. Traffic control may also be required as part of the job responsibilities. The position requires the technician to work overtime as needed to complete assigned tasks and participate in an on-call rotation schedule. Adherence to the City's Safety Program policies, procedures, and rules is mandatory. The technician will also assist other staff members with day-to-day operations and various tasks and projects as assigned, demonstrating adaptability to changes in the work environment and managing competing demands. The role may involve assisting other City departments for special projects and events, performing preventative maintenance on equipment, and ensuring the cleanliness and maintenance of City vehicles and assigned equipment. This position is classified as Level I according to the Personnel Guidelines, and the technician must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The job requires a high school diploma or GED, a valid Class C Texas State Driver's License, and a safe driving record. The technician must also pass a medical physical examination, drug test, and criminal background check. The role is physically demanding, requiring endurance and the ability to lift heavy objects, and involves working in various conditions, both indoors and outdoors, including extreme temperatures and wet conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the manual labor associated with the operation, maintenance, repair and construction of the water system, sanitary sewer system, and storm drainage system.
  • Assist with installing water and sewer taps.
  • Assist with locating water and sewer lines.
  • Assist with cleaning sewer stoppages.
  • Read water meters and troubleshoot and/or replace if necessary.
  • Perform visual inspections of businesses and residences for water and sewer leaks.
  • Assist with the maintenance of City facilities.
  • Perform traffic control as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Work overtime as required to complete assigned tasks.
  • Participate in on-call rotation schedule as required to perform the duties of the position.

Requirements

  • Experience in utility construction, maintenance and repair relating to water and wastewater.
  • Class I Wastewater Collection or Class D Wastewater Treatment, and/or Class D Groundwater Certification from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) or obtain within two (2) years of employment and schooling requirements.
  • Knowledge of procedures and techniques used in cleaning, maintenance and repair of utilities.
  • Knowledge of equipment and techniques used in minor construction, maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Knowledge of and proficient in, the use of tools and equipment required in maintenance and repair activities.
  • Good communication skills; requires a calm demeanor in responding to customer questions/and or complaints, and dealing with the general public in everyday activities.
  • Ability to work within established guidelines.
  • Ability to perform repetitious tasks.
  • Ability to use and operate pick-up truck, dump truck, tractor, forklift, front-end loader, and miscellaneous power tools.
  • Participate as first responders in emergency situations (i.e. tropical storms, hurricanes, and tornados, train derailments, hazardous material spills, etc.).
  • Must pass a medical physical examination and drug test.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Valid Class C Texas State Driver's License and safe driving record.

Nice-to-haves

  • Class B CDL or obtain within one (1) year of employment.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • First-Aid/CPR Certified.
  • Certified Flagger or previous experience as a flagger.
