About the position

The Utilities Operator I position at Thurston County Public Works involves the operation and maintenance of various wastewater treatment facilities and water systems. The role is essential for ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding environmental protection and public health. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team, responsible for monitoring systems, performing maintenance, and providing customer service related to utilities operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the operation of County utility systems including wastewater treatment plants and water distribution systems.
  • Monitor computerized systems, charts, gauges, and other indicators to determine equipment operation status.
  • Perform troubleshooting and general maintenance on pumps, motors, valves, pipes, and other equipment.
  • Inspect utilities-related construction projects and make Pass/Fail decisions regarding inspections.
  • Collect samples, perform basic laboratory tests, and record data.
  • Provide information and customer service to the public regarding utilities issues.
  • Perform after-hours on-call duty as part of a scheduled rotation.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License.
  • Ability to operate a computer and applicable software for job functions.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification (or obtain within six months of hire).
  • Six months of experience in millwright, mechanical, plant maintenance, utility installation/construction, or water treatment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of water distribution systems operations and processes.
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment facility and sewer collection operations.
  • Ability to utilize technical manuals, regulations, and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to perform basic electrical wiring and carpentry.
