About the position

The Utility Area Engineer (Transportation Engineer III) at the State Highway Administration is responsible for supervising a team of engineering technicians in Baltimore County. This role involves overseeing the review, approval, coordination, inspection, and acceptance of various permits related to utility and construction activities within the SHA right-of-way. The engineer will also respond to utility emergencies and ensure public safety during such events.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of engineering technicians in the review and approval of utility permits.
  • Coordinate and inspect construction activities within SHA right-of-way.
  • Manage the distribution and closeout of Miss Utility tickets as per the Miss Utility Law.
  • Respond to utility emergencies and set up Work Zone Traffic Control as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations during construction and maintenance activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of experience in professional engineering, with one year involving utility inspections or coordination.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license in the state of Maryland.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in engineering may substitute for one year of required experience.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Maryland or a comparable state.
