About the position

The Utility Business Controller is responsible for managing and participating in the business functions of the Water Utilities Department, which encompasses various areas such as accounting, budgeting, customer service, and administrative support. This role involves overseeing special projects, particularly the implementation of software systems, and ensuring staff training and compliance with safety protocols. The position also requires preparing reports and documentation for departmental initiatives and city management, as well as representing the department at various events.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and participate in Water Utilities Department business functions including accounting, budgeting, meter reading, billing, collections, and customer service.
  • Oversee special utilities projects, such as the implementation of software systems for Customer Service and Utility Billing.
  • Select staff and coordinate training to address deficiencies.
  • Implement discipline procedures and reinforce work safety concepts.
  • Investigate accidents within the department.
  • Prepare a variety of data, reports, and documentation for department initiatives and city management review.
  • Provide prepared documents and information for oversight groups such as the City Council and associated committees.
  • Coordinate bid processes with the Purchasing Department, City Attorney's Office, and other City departments as appropriate.
  • Represent the Water Utilities Department at local, state, federal, and industry events and provide event information to the department leadership team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Business Management, Accounting, or a closely related field.
  • Five years of relevant experience, including two years of supervisory experience.
