About the position

The Utility Engineer at the University of Pennsylvania plays a crucial role in managing and analyzing utility data and systems that support the university's energy and utility operations. This position involves overseeing the utility metering and billing processes, ensuring accurate data collection, and supporting sustainability initiatives. The Utility Engineer will collaborate with various departments to enhance energy efficiency and compliance with regulatory requirements, contributing to the university's long-term energy and utility infrastructure planning.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the utility metering and billing process, including collecting and recording monthly utility meter information.
  • Maintain a database of utility-related data and provide utility data for accounting and sustainability initiatives.
  • Provide engineering support for utility generation and distribution systems as required.
  • Assist with the preparation of RFPs, procure services, and manage vendors as needed.
  • Perform analyses on utility bills and meter data to validate consumption and billing rates.
  • Assist with the operational oversight of Penn's Load Serving Entity (LSE) and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
  • Troubleshoot meters and associated computer networks, managing maintenance and calibration contracts.
  • Support the Energy Engineering Manager in planning for long-term energy and utility needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering is required.
  • 3 to 5 years of engineering experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in managing and analyzing large amounts of numerical data using spreadsheets and analytic software is required.
  • Experience with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and Building Management Systems is required.
  • Familiarity with building controls, utility meters, and understanding energy markets and utility billing procedures is desired.

  • Experience with computer networking technology and cloud-based data storage and management systems is highly desired.
