About the position

As a Utility Locate Technician, you will be responsible for identifying and marking underground utilities to prevent damages and ensure public safety. This role involves using specialized equipment and computer-generated maps to locate cables, pipes, and other utilities, responding to requests and emergencies, and communicating effectively with various stakeholders. The position requires a strong commitment to quality and safety, with opportunities for career advancement and professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Drive to sites in response to routine ticket requests and emergencies.
  • Utilize provided mapping tools, location information, and specialized equipment to locate underground utilities.
  • Indicate utility locations using paint and flags, and communicate relevant information to excavation personnel and authorities.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency call-outs based on an established rotation schedule.
  • Maintain daily contact with utility managers, excavation crews, homeowners, and contractors to address locate issues.
  • Prioritize work by reviewing all locate requests and interpreting utility-provided maps/prints.
  • Spend 95% of job time in a field environment, performing utility locates in various locations and facing hazards like uneven terrain.
  • Perform utility locates by transmitting signals onto cables or pipes and following their paths above ground with specialized equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid, unexpired Driver's License
  • Prior work experience as a Field Technician or in a field-based role is preferred
  • Technical aptitude and familiarity with technology
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and adapt to different job sites and locations
  • Physical ability to walk, stand, lift, and walk 3-5 miles outdoors in various environments.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous utility locating or damage prevention experience is preferred but not mandatory
