About the position

The Utility Locator/Designator is responsible for designating and documenting both overhead and underground utilities on various projects. This role involves ensuring quality assurance for all utility systems designated in the field, utilizing a variety of subsurface utility locating and survey equipment. The position requires occasional travel and a strong focus on safety and compliance with established standards.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately designate overhead and underground utilities according to ASCE 38-02 standards.
  • Complete detailed field investigations.
  • Consult on schedule planning for field operations.
  • Engage in day-to-day problem solving.
  • Review record information prior to and during field investigations.
  • Collaborate with drafting staff to ensure completeness of data transfer.
  • Assist the Field Operations Manager with quality assurance reviews.
  • Demonstrate proficient knowledge of geophysical locating technology.
  • Utilize Electro Magnetic (EM), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Acoustic Pipe Locator (APL), and CCTV Sewer Camera.
  • Coordinate with clients, utility stakeholders, and property stakeholders.
  • Lead operations in the field for McCarthy Mapping projects.
  • Coordinate with subcontracted vendors for traffic control, hydro-excavation, and saw cutting.
  • Assist in training new Utility Designators.
  • Ensure quality assurance of utilities designated in the field.
  • Record utilities and structures designated in the field using electronic devices.
  • Complete accurate field reports at the time of investigation.
  • Attach quality pictures to the correct structures and reports.
  • Oversee data collection and ensure completeness of utility data collected.
  • Ensure equipment is utilized correctly and maintained according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Maintain company vehicles according to maintenance schedules.
  • Promote a safety-first mindset and align with McCarthy Safety Policies.

Requirements

  • Experience in utility designation and documentation.
  • Proficient knowledge of geophysical locating technology.
  • Ability to operate and maintain subsurface utility locating and survey equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience in quality assurance processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with safety management in field operations.
  • Familiarity with ASCE 38-02 standards.
  • Previous experience in training or mentoring new staff.
