Utility Meter Reader

About the position

The City of Salem is seeking two Utility Meter Readers to join the Public Works Utility Billing Customer Care Team. This role involves accurately reading water meters and recording usage on established routes, providing essential support for the city's utility infrastructure. The position offers opportunities for personal development and growth within the Public Works Department, which is responsible for maintaining the city's infrastructure and providing customer care for over 58,000 accounts.

Responsibilities

• Accurately read water meters and record usage on established routes in all weather conditions.
• Collect meter usage data using handheld devices, computers, and software.
• Document route notes and perform mathematical computations.
• Report broken meters, meter boxes, meter lids, and meters blocked by vegetation or other obstacles.
• Work independently in the field with little to no in-person supervision.
• Exercise independent judgment in completing tasks and collaborate with team members when needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Oregon Driver License and ability to meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
• 1 year of customer service experience or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
