About the position

The Utility Person B role at American Water involves performing various tasks related to the maintenance and repair of underground mains and distribution pipes. This position is essential for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of water services, contributing to the company's commitment to providing reliable drinking water and wastewater services to millions of customers.

Responsibilities

  • Set up barricades and place safety lights around work sites to protect workers from street traffic.
  • Break up asphalt and concrete using pneumatic power tools for trenching and compaction.
  • Manually dig valve boxes and curb boxes using a shovel and digging bar.
  • Guide pipe sections, valves, and fittings into position and hold pieces steady while workers tighten connections.
  • Tap into pressurized water mains.
  • Flare and connect copper and plastic piping.
  • Install repair clamps on pressurized water mains and service lines.
  • Operate valves and fire hydrants.
  • Investigate complaints and determine corrective action per company procedure.
  • Operate pneumatic and/or hydraulic boring equipment.
  • Complete all necessary forms, sketches, and field notes and be knowledgeable of the usage of maps and records.
  • Drive vehicles and/or trucks in performance of general job including housekeeping of the vehicle.
  • Use company technology to perform assigned duties.
  • Ensure environmental compliance with DEP and other government agencies and company regulations.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent certificate (GED).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
  • Must possess and maintain DEP Water Class E operator's license as per union contract.
  • Ability to skillfully use hand tools or machines needed for work.
  • Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to measure, cut, or otherwise work on materials or objects with great precision.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow instructions, safety rules, maps, diagrams, etc.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with company personnel.
  • Ability to compile, gather, collate, or classify information about work performed.
