About the position

The Utility Sample Specialist is responsible for supervising laboratory samplers and overseeing the chain of custody program for water, wastewater, and sludge samples. This role ensures compliance with federal and state regulatory guidelines while coordinating sample collection, inventory management, and staff training. The position requires a strong background in laboratory analysis and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Chain-of-Custody program, including sample scheduling and collection for various types of samples.
  • Log samples into the Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and ensure proper handling and sampling techniques.
  • Report discrepancies in samples and manage sample information in LIMS.
  • Pack and ship samples to contract laboratories, following all chain-of-custody procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of sampling supplies and order necessary materials for sample collection.
  • Assist in collecting a variety of samples and resolve inquiries related to water quality.
  • Instruct personnel on sample collection, safety procedures, and the use of field sampling equipment.
  • Supervise assigned staff, including scheduling, performance appraisal, and training.

Requirements

  • Associates of Science Degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Two years of experience in water laboratory analysis work.
  • Texas Class 'C' Driver's License or equivalent from another state.
  • Class 'C' Water Operators License issued by the State of Texas within one year of appointment.
