About the position

The Utility Service Technician I position at the City of Tucson's Water Department is an entry-level role responsible for obtaining water meter readings and performing various tasks related to the installation, activation, and servicing of residential and commercial water meters. The technician will work outdoors, walking a daily route to collect data and address water service issues, while ensuring accurate documentation and customer service under the supervision of the Water Services Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain water meter readings and related data using hand-held and mobile computers.
  • Install and maintain residential and commercial water meters up to 1 inch in size.
  • Serve as a point of contact for onsite and internal customers regarding water service issues.
  • Perform routine daily operator-level maintenance and meter replacements for existing meters.
  • Document meter reading problems and other meter issues.
  • Remove debris and cut vegetation to gain access to meters.
  • Perform activation and deactivation of service.
  • Apply meter locks/unlocks on delinquent accounts.
  • Re-install and reset damaged meter boxes.
  • Install endpoints to existing customer water meters for monthly meter read collection activities.
  • Extract water usage data from electronic reading devices to provide consumption data to customers.
  • Perform routine investigations for high bills, high consumption, non-registering meters, and meter operations.
  • Submit investigation reports to the customer service team for billing updates or corrections.
  • Investigate possible tampering at water meters and document findings.
  • Investigate and address leaks at the meter to determine responsibility for the leak.
  • Utilize utility billing and asset management systems to create, document, and close work orders.
  • Ensure accurate data entry and maintain data records.
  • Respond to and resolve internal and external customer inquiries in person or by phone.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License.
  • One year of directly related experience in utility meter reading or installation.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with utility billing systems, mapping, and asset management systems.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access).
  • Experience with operation and maintenance of equipment such as handheld metering devices, shovels, and digging bars.
