About the position

Citrus County is seeking a motivated Utility Technician I to join the Utility Operations and Maintenance team. This role is essential in providing safe and reliable potable water and wastewater services to the community. The technician will perform skilled technical work related to the operation, maintenance, and construction of water distribution and wastewater collection systems, contributing to the overall mission of enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and operates county vehicles or equipment while adhering to safety policies and roadway rules.
  • Operates and maintains sewage pump trucks, and performs installation, maintenance, and repairs of water and sewer services including meters, backflow devices, valves, and piping.
  • Assists in the operation and maintenance of wastewater pump stations.
  • Participates in preventive maintenance programs including facility and grounds maintenance.
  • Assumes on-call responsibilities and maintains 24/7 contact for emergency water and sewer repairs.
  • Performs work duties on weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Completes other duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Some coursework in principles and practices of utilities operations (water/wastewater) preferred.
  • Some experience in a related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Valid Florida Driver License or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida.
  • Must obtain Florida Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class 'A' with 'N' endorsement within one year of employment.
  • Must obtain certification in backflow (testing/repair), water distribution, or wastewater collection within one year of employment.
  • Ability to work after normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Sufficient physical strength, agility, and stamina to perform assigned tasks under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups, and the public.
  • Must obtain certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses within 90 days.
