About the position

The Utility Technician position at Houston Public Works involves the maintenance and operation of water and wastewater utilities across various locations. The role requires troubleshooting skills to ensure effective utility operations and maintenance, as well as the operation of sampling instruments and field analysis of water samples. The technician will also be responsible for preparing reports and maintaining records related to operations and maintenance activities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and operate water and wastewater utilities at various locations.
  • Utilize troubleshooting skills to address utility operations and maintenance.
  • Operate and maintain sampling instruments and perform field analysis of water samples.
  • Collect, preserve, send, and transport samples to the laboratory for analysis.
  • Operate valves and flush hydrants to address water quality issues.
  • Prepare and maintain reports, forms, and records for operations and maintenance activities.
  • Operate centrifuge or dryer in sludge processing.
  • Perform maintenance tasks related to wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Isolate water lines by operating valves and reviewing GIS for valve locations.
  • Renew utility services to designated areas.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED, or ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow instructions at a necessary level for job performance.
  • Six months of general maintenance/work experience.
  • Valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's driving policy.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in plant and/or lift station maintenance or the collection system.
