About the position
The Utility Worker II position at Howard County's Bureau of Highways involves performing semi-skilled manual labor and operating various equipment to support public works objectives. This role requires a combination of physical labor, equipment operation, and maintenance tasks, contributing to the maintenance and improvement of the county's infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Operates a variety of equipment such as spreader boxes, rollers, sweepers, and compactors in highway maintenance work.
- Performs routine maintenance on power equipment including lubrication, cleaning, and sharpening.
- Uses tools to cut grass and weeds, and remove tree limbs and debris.
- Lays brick for drainage boxes and installs forms for grading and masonry operations.
- Operates tailgate to regulate stone flow and uses air hammer to break paved surfaces.
- Spreads concrete and performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Installs traffic and street signs and assists in traffic signal maintenance operations.
- Sets up work zone traffic control and may deal directly with the public at work sites.
- May operate paint spray equipment and highway striping equipment as needed.
Requirements
- Any combination of education and experience sufficient to perform semi-skilled manual work.
- One year of experience in general laboring or public works maintenance and construction activities.
- Valid Class B CDL issued by the State of Maryland and DOT physical card.
Nice-to-haves
- Knowledge of methods and techniques of operating and caring for hand and power tools.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform heavy labor for prolonged periods under adverse weather conditions.
