About the position

A UX Designer at UWM is passionate about creating elegant experiences that align business goals with user's needs. You will collaborate with business stakeholders, product owners, development teams, and other members of the UX team to create the best possible user experience. This position will allow you to have wide-reaching influence over the relationship between our users and UWM. In this role, you will help team members in all different roles understand the benefits of certain business improvements that can be made with optimal user interfaces. You will mentor other team members to improve their domain knowledge and be a strong collaborator who enjoys working with a cross-disciplined team. Employing various UX research methods for data-driven design decisions will be a key part of your responsibilities. You will meet with stakeholders and development teams to understand business and functional requirements, and create wireframes, mock-ups, and reports for internal and external facing products, presenting these to the development team and stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have eight or more years of experience across multiple UX methodologies, demonstrating broad types of UX competencies. You will need a strong ability to assess designs based on usability and UX best practices and communicate findings and recommendations to team members. Experience with responsive design standards for desktop, tablet, and native mobile applications is essential, along with knowledge of accessibility standards, WCAG. Familiarity with the creation of user personas, user journeys, and other design artifacts is also required. You will be expected to produce exemplary artifacts and reference materials to support design initiatives and provide associated guidelines. Experience with usability testing software and methods to understand user behavior is crucial, as is the ability to mentor junior UX designers and serve as an educational resource for the entire organization.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with business stakeholders, product owners, and development teams to create optimal user experiences.

Requirements

  • Eight or more years of experience across multiple UX methodologies (e.g., information architecture, heuristics, usability, interactive design, research, producing deliverables, prototyping).
  • Strong ability to assess designs based on usability and UX best practices and communicate findings/recommendations to team members.
  • Experience with responsive design standards for desktop, tablet, and native mobile applications.
  • Knowledge and experience with managing the software lifecycle and Agile environments.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards, WCAG.
  • Familiarity with the creation of user personas, user journeys, and other design artifacts.
  • Experience with modern design tools (e.g., Adobe XD, Sketch, Figma).
  • Ability to produce exemplary artifacts and reference materials to support design initiatives.
  • Experience with usability testing software and methods to understand user behavior.

Nice-to-haves

  • Degree in Human Computer Interaction, User Experience Design, or Interaction Design.
  • Knowledge of creating/maintaining design systems and designing to brand standards/style guides.
  • Experience with heuristic analysis.
  • Exemplary critical thinking skills.
  • Exceptional emotional intelligence skills.
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  • Experience with technical writing.
