About the position

The UX Researcher / Designer sits on the Human Factors Engineering & User Experience team and has command over both UX research and UX design principles. The UX Researcher / Designer owns pre-defined tasks within a larger UI/UX design and usability engineering effort such as user research plans, user persona development, information architecture / UX maps, user journey maps, and low/medium/high fidelity wireframes and product mockups. Plans and conducts customer and competitive research to create detailed usability & UX improvement plans/concepts, select/manage external usability design resources, and lead internal and external development resources. As needed based on project necessity & individual bandwidth, this role may also support Human Factors Engineers to plan and execute HFE deliverables like documentation, usability studies, etc. Applies UI/UX Design & Engineering principles, Human-centered Design principles, and Human Factors Engineering principles to the evaluation and solution of complex product design problems. Exercises independent judgment in the planning, organizing and performing work, monitors performance, and reports status to manager.

Responsibilities

  • Represents the Human Factors Engineering & User Experience function and perspective on core teams - strongly advocating the needs of users while championing a user-centered research and design process.
  • Researches and designs user experiences for complex systems of medical devices (involving both hardware and software) from early research and strategy to prototyping and testing.
  • Conducts user research through methods like interviews, card sorting, eye tracking, ethnographic research, A/B testing, usability testing, and other qualitative/quantitative methods to deeply understand user needs and pain points.
  • Creates detailed user research plans, user personas, user journey maps, information architecture, wireframes, and low/medium/high-fidelity interactive prototypes.
  • Supports Human Factors Engineers to create and revise accurate documentation related to the Human Factors & Usability Engineering Process in a timely manner for projects.
  • Support Human Factors Engineers to design, plan, and execute usability studies on designed prototypes that have been vetted through the user research process.
  • Interfaces and builds rapport with a complex network of users including expert customer HCPs, translating feedback from these users into low/medium/high fidelity prototypes and actionable design improvement suggestions for the project team.
  • Stays informed on the latest UI/UX design best practices, trends, and design tools, and communicates updates to the team to ensure optimal and innovative user-centered design processes.
  • Collaborates with a cross-functional team, effectively communicating rationale for design decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
  • Keeps updated on and ensures documents and prototypes adhere to current Regulatory Guidelines on medical device Human Factors & User Experience.

Requirements

  • BS/BA Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, Human Centered Design, UI/UX Design, Cognitive Science, Human Factors Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience (with healthcare / medical products preferred) with a bachelor's degree; or 1 year of relevant work experience (with healthcare / medical products preferred) with a master's degree.

Nice-to-haves

  • A strong portfolio (with at least 2 project examples) demonstrating expertise in UX Research & Design.
  • Proven experience designing holistic, end-to-end consumer product experiences that resonate with users and drive business success.
  • A sophisticated design sensibility, shaped by a deep curiosity for both design and the world around you, continuously seeking inspiration from diverse sources.
  • Master's or Doctoral Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, Human Centered Design, UI/UX Design, Cognitive Science, Human Factors Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • Expertise in Figma. Fluent in common prototyping tools; Adobe XD, Sketch, or similar.
  • Experience in User and Ethnographic Research.
  • Experience with Agile / Scrum methodology.
  • Medical device or healthcare product experience.
  • Ability to travel up to approximately 20%, including internationally.
