About the position

The Part-Time Reading Intervention Tutor (VALLSS Tutor) is responsible for assisting the teaching staff with the school's literacy program and supporting classroom teachers in their instructional efforts. This role involves coordinating with the Reading Specialist and classroom teachers to enhance instructional strategies and provide direct support to students in reading and writing.

Responsibilities

  • Discusses assigned teaching area with Reading Specialist and classroom teacher to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Prepares lesson outline and plan in assigned areas and submits outline to Reading Specialist for review.
  • Plans, prepares, and develops various teaching aids such as hands-on manipulatives, reading materials, and writing materials.
  • Presents subject matter to students, utilizing a variety of methods and techniques for guided reading and guided writing.
  • Attends training workshops.
  • Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.
  • Helps children locate and use materials.
  • Encourages safety habits in work and play.
  • Encourages children to work independently.
  • Listens to children.
  • Assists Reading Specialist and teachers with routine tasks such as organizing student information in cumulative files and gathering resource and supplementary materials.
  • Enters student information into online database.
  • Participates in fire drills and special events.
  • Supervises the entire classroom when called upon to do so by the building principal.
  • Conducts student assessments.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Hold an associate's degree or the equivalent of two years of college or demonstrated knowledge of and ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing, and math through state assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, students, and parents.
  • Possess general knowledge of the practices, methods, and techniques used in classroom teaching.
