About the position

The HPC System Administrator I position at the Vanguard Center of High Performance Computing (VCHPC) involves providing technical support for high-performance computing systems, primarily focusing on Linux and Microsoft Windows environments. The role includes system installation, maintenance, user account management, and troubleshooting hardware and software issues. The position supports various projects for the Department of Defense and requires effective communication with vendors and team members. The role may allow for telework, subject to approval, and is contingent on program needs and funding availability.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Linux and Microsoft Windows systems support including operating system installation and maintenance.
  • Manage user accounts and perform data backup and recovery.
  • Provide support for active directory, mail, name, blackberry, and file services.
  • Support Department of Defense, commercial, and educational projects.
  • Provide technical support for the VCHPC help desk and PC Support Group.
  • Analyze and resolve hardware and software problems independently.
  • Develop and maintain documentation regarding VCHPC computing infrastructure.
  • Stay updated on high-performance computing technologies and operating systems.
  • Communicate with hardware and software vendors to maintain awareness of technologies.
  • Work closely with senior computational professionals to determine customer requirements and effective application of systems.
  • Provide training for staff and users as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physical or Engineering Science, or equivalent experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience related to the specified duties.
  • Knowledge of UNIX concepts, script languages (CSH & Perl), and C or C++ system utilities.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software problem resolution procedures.
  • Familiarity with DoD security infrastructure methodologies.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to provide basic Linux and Windows systems support in a multi-computer production environment.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and solve complex problems.
