About the position

The Variable Victim Advocate position at the City of Lakewood is a part-time role focused on providing support to victims and witnesses of crimes. The advocate will respond to crisis situations, offer emotional support, and assist victims in navigating the criminal justice process. This role requires on-call availability during specific hours and involves working closely with law enforcement and community organizations to ensure victims receive the necessary resources and information regarding their cases.

Responsibilities

• Provide support and aid to victims and witnesses of criminal offenses and crisis situations.
• Respond to crisis situations reported to the Police Department, providing intervention and comfort.
• Act as a liaison between victims and law enforcement, answering questions and providing updates.
• Assist victims with information about their rights and referrals to community organizations.
• Develop safety plans with victims concerned about their safety.
• Assist with Crime Victim Compensation applications and navigate available resources.
• Review crime reports to identify and contact victims and witnesses.
• Provide crisis intervention services and municipal court services to victims.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• 2 years of victim advocate experience
• Valid Driver's License with a good motor vehicle record
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Good judgment and problem-solving abilities
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Knowledge of police procedures and criminal law related to domestic violence cases
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Computer skills

Nice-to-haves

• Bilingual (Spanish-speaking) is a desirable qualification

• On-call pay rate of $3.00/hour unless called in to work
• Pay rate of $28.16 - $39.39/hour based on qualifications
