About the position

The Vegetation Manager position at the Scappoose Bay Watershed Council is a full-time, permanent role focused on managing a native plant nursery and overseeing habitat restoration projects within the Scappoose Bay watershed. The role involves significant fieldwork, community engagement, and collaboration with various stakeholders to promote native plant restoration and invasive weed management. The ideal candidate will have a passion for plants and the outdoors, and will be responsible for both nursery operations and field management activities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain nursery stock through regular weeding, re-potting, watering, etc.
  • Coordinate volunteer participation, including regular communication, assigning tasks, training, and recruitment.
  • Source plant stock from local seed sources, propagate from cuttings, or purchase bareroot from wholesale providers.
  • Keep accurate plant and equipment inventory.
  • Oversee nursery site and equipment maintenance in coordination with Scappoose High School Maintenance Staff.
  • Create planting plans for projects and stage onsite.
  • Organize semiannual plant sale fundraiser including advertising, staffing, and day-of operations.
  • Develop and maintain positive cooperative working relations with residents of the watershed and local agencies.
  • Work with landowners and partners to develop invasive weed restoration actions.
  • Assist and project manage contractors during native plantings at restoration sites.
  • Lead, stage and plant native plants with volunteers in the community.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in Natural Resource, Horticulture, or related field and 1 year of experience; or High School graduate and 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Interdisciplinary understanding of hydrology and ecology.
  • Strong professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with efficient time management skills.
  • Interpersonal skills to work with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Comfort in conducting field work, including walking over uneven terrain and working in inclement weather.
  • Oregon Commercial Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain within 90 days.
  • Proficiency with MS Suite, Wordpress, Mailchimp, and Gmail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Some GIS experience preferred, mainly field maps.
  • History of successful project management.
  • Knowledge of local native and invasive plants.
