About the position

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This is an extended posting through December 6, 2024, for Vehicle/Repair Technician I (VERT I) positions in Division 14, Jackson County. Multiple VERT I positions will be filled from each extended county posting. Interested applicants will only have to apply one time to be considered for all our VERT I vacancies in each respective county during this time frame. However, if an applicant is interested in applying for a VERT I position in more than one county, they will need to apply to each respective county posting for which they are seeking employment. These are permanent NCDOT positions with full benefits including health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Perform semi-skilled small engine, automotive and heavy equipment repair.
  • Conduct service, inspection, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of mechanical systems for gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment.
  • Perform inspection and service to moderately complex mechanical systems analysis using advanced diagnostic instruments and software.
  • Conduct parts/systems failure analysis.
  • Determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish work assignments.
  • Inspect and replace brake pads and shoes, replace regulators, alternators and belts.
  • Fit or repair standard aftermarket upgrades and equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, tires and tubes, wheels & rims, cranking systems, lighting systems, cooling systems and hydraulic systems.
  • Work during adverse weather conditions such as snow, ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.

Requirements

  • Experience in the repair and replacement of tires.
  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.
  • Skill in the use of at least 2 tools and pieces of equipment used in the equipment shop such as wrenches, sockets, battery charger, hydraulic jacks, loader, forklift, automotive/truck lift, fuel service truck, tire changer, tire balancer, welder, cutting torch, diagnostic equipment, computer, tire jack, tire balance machine, pneumatic wrench, diagnostic gauges, electronic tester, air impact wrench, air compressor, air gun, torque wrench.
  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, or the ability to obtain it within 360 days of hire.
  • Ability to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned.

Nice-to-haves

  • Current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
