About the position

The Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician II position at the South Carolina Department of Transportation involves performing skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance on a variety of automotive and heavy equipment. This role requires the technician to handle service calls on the road, addressing repairs to road equipment as needed. The technician will utilize online electronic service repair manuals to troubleshoot equipment issues effectively. Additionally, the technician is responsible for acquiring special parts and services through telephone and internet resources, ensuring that all necessary components are available for repairs. In this position, the technician will also perform service and repair work on small engines, including but not limited to chain saws, generators, and pumps. A critical aspect of the role involves maintaining an inventory of oil and hydraulic oil, ensuring that the storage room complies with OSHA regulations. Preventive maintenance inspections on vehicles and equipment are also a key responsibility, along with coordinating scheduled services and repairs with maintenance foremen. The technician may be called upon to assist in emergency operations, which could require working 12-hour shifts. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary, making flexibility and adaptability important traits for candidates in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance to motors, transmissions, brakes, cooling and electrical systems on automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Handle service calls on the road for repair to road equipment.

  • Perform service and repair work on small engines, such as chain saws, generators, and pumps.
  • Maintain inventory of oil and hydraulic oil and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations in the storage room.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections on vehicles and equipment.
  • Coordinate scheduled services and repairs with maintenance foremen.
  • Assist in emergency operations which may require 12-hour shifts.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • One and one-half (1.5) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment.
  • Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
  • Attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
