About the position

The Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician II position at NCDOT involves performing semi-skilled and skilled repairs on small engines, automotive, heavy equipment, and tires. The role requires a diverse range of mechanical tasks, including service, inspection, repair, and diagnosis of various mechanical systems for gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines. Technicians will utilize advanced diagnostic tools and software to analyze mechanical systems and perform necessary repairs under general supervision.

Responsibilities

• Perform semi-skilled and skilled repairs on small engines, automotive, heavy equipment, and tires.
• Conduct inspections and service on mechanical systems.
• Utilize advanced diagnostic instruments and software for mechanical systems analysis.
• Conduct parts/systems failure analysis and calibrate engine diagnostic tools.
• Determine materials, techniques, and tools needed for work assignments.
• Follow standard operational guidelines and shop safety procedures.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED and two years of experience in vehicle/equipment repair or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience in performing preventive maintenance on light, medium, or heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment.
• Experience in diagnostics of basic electrical systems and proper repair of wiring.
• Experience in basic hydraulic system repairs including component replacement and hoses.
• Knowledge of diagnostic software, tools, and equipment for trucks and heavy equipment.

Nice-to-haves

• Current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
