About the position

This is an extended posting through December 6, 2024, for Mechanic - Vehicle/Repair Technician II (VERT II) positions in Division 14, Transylvania County. Multiple VERT II positions will be filled from each extended county posting. Interested applicants will only have to apply one time to be considered for all our VERT II vacancies in each respective county during this time frame. However, if an applicant is interested in applying for a VERT II position in more than one county, they will need to apply to each respective county posting for which they are seeking employment. These are permanent NCDOT positions with full benefits including health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled small engine, automotive, and/or heavy equipment repair.
  • Conduct service, inspection, repair, rebuild, and diagnosis of mechanical systems for gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment.
  • Use advanced diagnostic instruments and software for complex mechanical systems analysis.
  • Perform parts/systems failure analysis and calibrate, adjust, and operate engine analyzers.
  • Determine materials, techniques, and tools to accomplish work assignments.
  • Perform recurring and non-recurring work such as electrical, suspension, brake system repair, and fitting and repairing specialized equipment.
  • Work during adverse weather conditions and extended hours, including weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on light, medium, heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Experience in diagnostics of basic electrical systems and proper repair of wiring.
  • Experience in basic hydraulic system repairs including component replacement and hoses.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in repair work.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, or the ability to obtain it within 360 days of hire.
  • Current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
