About the position

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This is an extended posting through January 31st, 2025 for Vehicle/Repair Technician I (VERT I) positions in Division 14, Swain County. Multiple VERT I positions will be filled from each extended county posting. Interested applicants will only have to apply one time to be considered for all our VERT I vacancies in each respective county during this time frame. However, if an applicant is interested in applying for a VERT I position in more than one county, they will need to apply to each respective county posting for which they are seeking employment. These are permanent NCDOT positions with full benefits including health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Perform semi-skilled small engine, automotive and heavy equipment repair.
  • Conduct service, inspection, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of mechanical systems for gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment.
  • Use advanced diagnostic instruments and software for moderately complex mechanical systems analysis.
  • Determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish work assignments.
  • Inspect and replace brake pads and shoes, replace regulators, alternators and belts.
  • Fit or repair standard aftermarket upgrades and equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on tires, wheels & rims, cranking systems, lighting systems, cooling systems and hydraulic systems.
  • Work during adverse weather conditions such as snow, ice, tornadoes, and hurricanes.

Requirements

  • Experience in the repair and replacement of tires.
  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.
  • Skill in the use of at least 2 tools and pieces of equipment used in the equipment shop.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire.
  • Certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician.
