About the position

The Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician position with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) involves performing semi-skilled mechanical work on a variety of vehicles and equipment. The role includes tasks such as inspection, repair, and maintenance of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines. Technicians will work with advanced diagnostic tools and are expected to handle a range of mechanical systems, ensuring the operational efficiency of the equipment. Responsibilities

  • Perform semi-skilled repairs on small engines, automotive, and heavy equipment.
  • Conduct inspections and preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical issues using advanced diagnostic instruments and software.
  • Replace and repair components such as brake pads, alternators, and hydraulic systems.
  • Determine materials, techniques, and tools needed for various work assignments.
  • Work in adverse weather conditions and during extended hours, including weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience in the repair and replacement of tires.
  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on light, medium, or heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Skill in using at least two tools or pieces of equipment commonly used in the shop.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain one within 360 days of hire.
  • EPA Universal Certification license.
