About the position

The Vehicle Fleet Technician at the University of Southern California (USC) is responsible for performing regular maintenance, certifications, and repairs on assigned vehicle fleets. This role includes providing roadside assistance, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and maintaining service schedules. The technician will work closely with mechanics and manage inventory of parts while promoting an inclusive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular maintenance on vehicle fleets including cars, scooters, forklifts, and heavy equipment.
  • Assist mechanics with repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Repair or replace failing components and document services performed.
  • Answer calls for roadside assistance in a timely manner.
  • Create and prepare reports as needed.
  • Ensure repairs meet safety standards and regulations.
  • Keep up to date with manufacturer recalls and warranty information.
  • Perform thorough safety checks to prevent hazards.
  • Dispose of materials in compliance with regulations.
  • Operate and maintain specialized tools and heavy equipment.
  • Maintain service schedules per manufacturer timelines.
  • Order, track, and manage inventory of parts and supplies.
  • Promote an inclusive work environment and uphold USC's Code of Ethics.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; specialized/technical training.
  • 1 year of experience as an automotive/diesel technician or similar.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of transportation industry.
  • Knowledge of automotive systems such as engines, transmissions, and brakes.
  • Experience performing DOT-regulated inspections and preventative maintenance.
  • Proven knowledge of DMV and DOT policies and procedures.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Valid driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's degree or equivalent experience/education.
  • 2 years of experience as an automotive, diesel, or golf cart technician.
  • Experience diagnosing complex vehicle issues.
  • Data gathering and analysis skills.
