About the position

The Vessel Operations Manager at John S. Connor, Inc. is responsible for overseeing international vessel operations, providing comprehensive agency and husbandry services for vessel owners, operators, charterers, and cargo interests. This role involves coordinating the arrival, cargo operations, departure, documentation, and logistical requirements of commercial vessels in key ports. The manager will lead a team, ensuring smooth operations and compliance with regulations while fostering a culture of integrity and excellence within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Hire, train, and supervise vessel agents to ensure proper execution of vessel operations.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide guidance to team members for professional growth.
  • Assign boarding agents to vessels and ensure efficient handling of ship's business related to cargo operations and owner husbandry matters.
  • Communicate with vessels prior to arrival to provide port and berth particulars and gather required ship information.
  • Ensure all pre-arrival information is submitted to the United States Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection for authorization.
  • Notify pilots, towage companies, line handlers, surveyors, and other interested parties of vessel arrivals and departures.
  • Arrange for services such as crew changes, cash to Master, clearance and delivery of spare parts, and bunker delivery as directed by vessel owners or operators.
  • Review vessel files with assigned boarding agents prior to vessel arrival to ensure all requirements are understood.
  • Compile and submit all required departure documents to U.S. Government agencies after the vessel departs.
  • Assemble and review invoices from vendors, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare final port disbursement accounts and provide them to principals within forty-five days of vessel departure.
  • Assist in the preparation of export cargo documentation for customers, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in marketing and promoting vessel agency services to potential clients.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma is required; a Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the maritime industry, specifically in vessel operations or agency services.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to supervise and train team members effectively.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Google and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, multitask, and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Coast Guard regulations, and international maritime operations is required.
