About the position

The Vessel Traffic Management Specialist position at the U.S. Coast Guard involves providing vessel traffic management services in a 24/7 operational environment. This role is critical for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of maritime traffic, supporting various Coast Guard missions, and coordinating with other federal agencies. The specialist will operate surveillance sensors and electronic equipment, assist in maritime operations, and participate in training exercises for emergency preparedness.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of surveillance sensors, communications, data processing, keyboard and other electronic equipment.
  • Coordinate advisory information between participating and non-participating vessels and small craft.
  • Assist other Federal agencies in executing operational activities in support of drug interdiction or immigration control.
  • Provide tracking or other sensor information in support of Coast Guard missions, including maritime traffic management, homeland security, port security, search and rescue, law enforcement, and military missions.
  • Participate in training exercises to prepare for maritime accidents or natural disasters.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A valid state driver's license is required.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the federal service, or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements.
  • Experience in a transportation facility or terminal involving maritime vessel regulations and traffic management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with federal, state, and municipal regulations governing maritime vessels.
  • Knowledge of navigation rules and regulations.
  • Skill in operating radiotelephone systems and other communication technologies.
