About the position

The Vet Assistant/Kennel Tech position at Henry County Humane Society involves providing essential care and support for animals in a humane society setting. The role includes both technical veterinary assistance and kennel maintenance, ensuring the health and well-being of animals while also engaging with pet owners and the community.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and record patient histories, vital signs, and weights.
  • Perform fecal testing.
  • Dispense and administer medications, vaccines, serums, and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
  • Conduct monthly CVT exams and administer monthly preventative care.
  • Provide specialized nursing care for injured or ill animals.
  • Communicate with and educate owners in a compassionate, tactful, professional manner.
  • Maintain knowledge of preventative healthcare recommendations to answer client questions and provide education on veterinary services.
  • Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies.
  • Work well with all team members to support the humane society's mission.
  • Accurately calculate and record all medications and injections administered.
  • Update medical records as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness of exam rooms, surgery suite, and treatment area.
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and longevity by vacuuming pet hair from wheels and equipment.
  • Discard syringes, vials, and containers in appropriate containers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Feed, water, exercise, bathe, and groom animals.
  • Clean, disinfect, and sanitize kennels, runs, and yards.
  • Monitor animals for signs of illness, disease, or discontent and report abnormal activity to supervisors.
  • Administer medications and vaccinations to animals requiring medical treatment.
  • Respond to customer questions and concerns, or assist with adoptions.
  • Mark charts for eating, drinking, fecal and urine production, and record medication instructions.
  • Assist with maintaining equipment like chemical mixers, hose units, and steam machines.
  • Monitor supply needs and communicate with supervisors.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prefer associate's degree in applied science, veterinary technology, but will consider at least 3 years of experience in lieu of degree.
  • Experience in medication administration is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and accept direction on assignments.
  • Strong critical thinking skills to identify strengths and weaknesses of solutions.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with clients.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in veterinary technology or animal care.
  • Knowledge of preventative healthcare recommendations.
  • Customer service experience in a veterinary or animal care setting.
