About the position

The Veteran Employment Representative (DVOP) position at the State of Kansas is a full-time role dedicated to advocating for military veterans and assisting them in their transition to civilian employment. This position is located at the Lenexa Workforce Center and operates on a Monday to Friday schedule from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The primary focus of this role is to engage with local employers and community leaders to promote the hiring of veterans, while also providing essential resources and support to veterans seeking employment. The representative will be responsible for conducting outreach efforts, both in-person and electronically, to connect with businesses and understand their specific needs, demonstrating how the services offered by the Workforce Center can be beneficial. In addition to advocacy, the role involves meticulous documentation of customer interactions and service history within the KANSASWORKS customer management system. The representative will also lead workshops aimed at enhancing work readiness and business skills among veterans. This position requires a valid driver's license and the ability to travel to meet with employers and veterans, ensuring a meaningful impact in the community. The ideal candidate will have a strong customer service orientation, goal-oriented mindset, and a proactive approach to coaching individuals on career issues. As a Veteran who has transitioned from military service, the representative will leverage their unique experiences to empower other veterans, helping them rediscover their potential for success in their new civilian lives. This role is not just about job placement; it is about making a difference in the lives of those who have served the country, fostering a supportive environment for their reintegration into the workforce.

Responsibilities

  • Advocate for Veterans by promoting their hiring within the business community.
  • Empower local employers by informing them about the resources available through Veterans' employment services.
  • Foster connections between employers and veterans by identifying potential clients and leads.
  • Engage in proactive outreach efforts to connect with businesses and understand their needs.
  • Collaborate with peers to share insights and strategies for outreach and business intelligence.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation of customer interactions and service history in the KANSASWORKS system.
  • Lead workshops in collaboration with employers to enhance work readiness and business skills.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED is the minimum educational requirement.
  • 24 Credit Hours Toward a Bachelor's Degree may substitute for relevant work experience.
  • Career Development Technician Certification can substitute for 6 months of experience or a Bachelor's degree.
  • 6 Months of Relevant Experience in career counseling, job placement, recruitment, assessment, or staff deployment.
  • Valid Driver's License is required or the ability to travel as needed.
  • Strong initiative and coaching skills to guide individuals on career issues.
  • Excellent customer service orientation and skills.
  • Goal-oriented with a focus on achieving objectives.
  • Understanding of veterans' employment challenges and strategies to address them.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • One year of relevant work experience in marketing or sales.
  • Experience with private sector hiring practices.
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Certifications from the National Veterans' Training Institute.
