About the position

As a member of the Airgas ALTEC Engineering Solutions Group, the Applications Engineer will play a pivotal role in the growth of Airgas' specialty gas, industrial, and bulk gas business. This position is focused on the design and installation of equipment systems that support Airgas' portfolio of gas applications across various industries. The engineer will be responsible for providing customers with comprehensive support and development of complete process solutions, which include gases, technology, and equipment. The role emphasizes safety, efficiency, and reliability, ensuring that customer expectations are not only met but exceeded. The Applications Engineer will need to understand technical processes for specific industrial gas applications and possess the ability to diagnose issues while developing a value proposition utilizing Airgas solutions and equipment. Key applications include inerting, industrial cryogenics, and wastewater treatment, particularly in the refining, pulp & paper, and chemicals market areas. The engineer will provide proactive technical sales support and business development to Airgas' 16 Regional Companies, leveraging their process knowledge, industry experience, and applications background. Collaboration with local sales teams is essential to identify leads through business development techniques. The engineer will prepare and present technical and value-based proposals to Airgas prospects and customers. This role encompasses all aspects of customer relationships, from initial contact and problem identification to applications and equipment selection, data analysis, equipment/system development, proposal creation, equipment specification/manufacturing, startup, and long-term customer support and application marketing. Additionally, the engineer will be involved in new product and application identification and development, interfacing with regional account managers, bulk gas specialists, equipment engineers, and marketing teams, as well as external customers and equipment vendors. The position requires extensive knowledge of gas properties and thermodynamics, and the engineer will rely on their experience and judgment to accomplish goals. They will also create training materials and conduct training sessions for both internal and external customers, and may assist in the development, oversight, and training of Equipment Engineers and Applications Engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Design and install equipment systems supporting Airgas' gas applications.
  • Provide comprehensive process solutions including gases, technology, and equipment.
  • Understand technical processes for specific industrial gas applications.
  • Diagnose issues and develop value propositions utilizing Airgas solutions.
  • Provide proactive technical sales support and business development to regional sales groups.
  • Collaborate with local sales teams to identify leads and prepare technical proposals.
  • Manage all aspects of customer relationships from initial contact to long-term support.
  • Identify and develop new products and applications.
  • Create training materials and conduct training sessions for customers and staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • 3-10 years of applications engineering or direct industry experience.
  • Ability to travel domestically up to approximately 50%, including overnight stays.
  • Willingness to work weekends and/or holidays as needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the refining, pulp & paper, and chemicals market areas.
  • Familiarity with a wide variety of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the industry.
  • Extensive knowledge of gas properties and thermodynamics.
