About the position

The GIS Software Engineer at American Water is responsible for the development and technical support of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This role involves managing the entire GIS technology stack, including databases, backend processes, API servers, and web applications. The engineer collaborates with business stakeholders to implement new products and maintain existing systems, ensuring effective software architecture and user adoption.

Responsibilities

  • Build data engineering pipelines to support REST APIs used in web mapping applications.
  • Write and maintain Python libraries that support the overall GIS IT infrastructure.
  • Write scripts that automate the administration of ArcGIS Enterprise software.
  • Design and implement large-scale spatial analysis models for optimizing utility operations.
  • Develop a JavaScript framework for delivering custom web mapping applications.
  • Collaborate with other IT domains to implement technologies that interact with GIS.
  • Engage with product owners to design and deploy GIS applications.
  • Prepare technical documentation and diagrams for application and technology pipelines.

Requirements

  • 1 to 3 years of programming experience, preferably developing GIS tools and web/mobile applications within the Esri suite.
  • Strong programming skills with Python, JavaScript, or similar scripting languages.
  • Experience with ESRI libraries such as ArcPy, ArcGIS API for JavaScript, and Arcade.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server or similar relational database.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Enterprise tools such as ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Online.
  • Knowledge of geoprocessing tools and geospatial data analysis methods.
  • Familiarity with software development methodologies and version control.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) preferred.
  • Knowledge of water and wastewater utility operations preferred.
  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Geographic Information Systems, Geography or related field preferred.
