About the position

The Payroll Specialist at Airgas plays a crucial role in ensuring payroll accuracy and compliance across the organization. This position involves daily collaboration with Airgas Managers and associates to manage payroll operations effectively. The Payroll Specialist is responsible for processing multistate payroll for both weekly and biweekly staff, which requires a high level of organizational skills, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal communication abilities. The role demands a thorough understanding of tax regulations and legal requirements to ensure compliance with established guidelines and local payroll rules. Key responsibilities include the accurate and timely processing of payroll using Workday, ensuring compliance with state, federal, and local requirements. The Payroll Specialist will also handle wage attachments such as child support orders, tax levies, and garnishments, as well as process manual checks, special pays, and corrections or adjustments. Maintaining payroll records and filing administration according to internal practices is essential, as is facilitating strong customer service relationships with both internal and external customers. The role also involves responding to service tickets and routine inquiries regarding payroll issues, assisting accounting staff in resolving payroll-related transactions, and providing support to peers and leadership as needed. Participation in payroll year-end activities and process improvement projects assigned by the Payroll Manager is also part of the job. The Payroll Specialist must adhere to internal control processes when initiating, recording, summarizing, and reporting payroll transactions, ensuring the integrity of payroll operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily payroll operations including multistate payroll processing for weekly and biweekly staff.
  • Ensure compliance with state, federal, and local payroll requirements using Workday.
  • Understand tax regulations and legal requirements to maintain compliance with established guidelines.
  • Timely submission of wage attachments such as child support orders, tax levies, and garnishments.
  • Process manual checks, special pays, gross-ups, and corrections/adjustments as needed.
  • Maintain payroll records and filing administration according to internal department practices.
  • Facilitate strong customer service relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Respond to service tickets and routine inquiries regarding payroll issues.
  • Assist accounting staff in the research and resolution of payroll-related transactions.
  • Provide support to peers and leadership as needed, including timely feedback to management.
  • Assist in process improvement projects and other initiatives as assigned by the Payroll Manager.
  • Actively participate in payroll year-end activities as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a payroll-related role.
  • Relevant certifications such as Certified Payroll Professional or Fundamental Payroll Certification are a plus.
  • Preferred background in Workday payroll.
  • Strong attention to detail and mathematical skills.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate and establish working relationships with co-workers and officials in other departments.
  • Utilize discretion in handling confidential information.
