About the position

The Veterinary Assistant at Petco plays a crucial role in providing excellent medical care to patients at the Vetco Total Care full-service hospital while ensuring exceptional customer service to pet owners. This position is integral to fostering a cohesive and motivated team environment, where the needs of the patients come first and every team member is empowered to create an exceptional customer experience.

Responsibilities

• Greet clients and patients, escort them into exam rooms, and record vital signs and medical history.
• Assist veterinarians with appointments, surgeries, and other medical procedures under supervision.
• Perform patient restraint and process laboratory samples as directed by the veterinarian.
• Schedule appointments and provide client education regarding pet care and treatment.
• Maintain and update electronic medical records for clients and patients.
• Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, including monitoring during anesthesia.
• Administer in-hospital treatments for sick patients, including medications and fluid therapy.
• Train new staff members and assist in the dissemination of knowledge within the team.
• Keep the hospital environment clean and organized, performing regular cleaning duties.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of previous experience in a veterinary practice or relatable animal care experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Compassionate and sympathetic demeanor, maintaining professionalism in stressful situations.
• Basic telephone and computer skills.
• Ability to work as a team player and willingness to learn new techniques.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in supervising or leading a team.
• Bilingual in Spanish.
